In one occasion Antonio convinces Sebastian, who is Alonso’s sibling, to execute Alonso while he is resting. Since once Alonso is dead Sebastian will be the sole beneficiary to the seat †As thou got’st Milan, I’’come by Naples. Draw thy blade; one stroke will free thee from the tribute which thou payest, and I the lord will cherish thee. † (Lines 186-189) Another case of characters attempting to ascend past their place of intensity; is when Trinculo a jokester and Stephano a head servant figure they can become leaders of the island. Caliban is Prospero’s worker on the island and disdains him for driving him to do his offering; when in his brain he think that’s the island has a place with him and he ought to be in control. When abandoned on the island all the characters free sight of the first levels of leadership that was once settled before they went to the island. These characters imagine the island as a space of opportunity and undiscovered potential. As should be obvious the play †The Tempest† gives us how rapidly man is happy to increase new control over individuals. By ascending in their status, using any and all means. Characters are eager to murder, double-cross family, and lie to one another to accomplish their ravenous wants. Toward the finish of the play Prospero can go up against Alonso and his sibling Antonio, who results in Prospero recovering his title as Duke of Milan, This occasion reestablishes the once broken chain of common request, and hence returning things to the manner in which it used to be. Indicating the subordinate truth of the idea of the incredible chain of being. †The suggestion was that common insubordination made the chain be broken, and as indicated by the principle of correspondence, this would have want outcomes in different domains.

Reflective Writing And Theories Of Reflection Education Essay

Intelligent Writing And Theories Of Reflection Education Essay There are a few kinds of reflection. As referenced by Taylor, All sorts of reflection are significant and a blend of these might be utilized to comprehend practice and to bring changes. Specialized Reflection is commonly used to take a gander at clinical practices and systems alongside the logical information. Be that as it may, values have no influence in this. Down to earth Reflection then again passes judgment on human encounters and suspicions. It additionally creates basic qualities in-accordance with hierarchical qualities. Emancipatory (Critical) Reflection includes scrutinizes of the presumptions on which our social, political and social convictions are based with the possibility of evolving them. Intelligent Practice is idea created by Donald Schon. There are additionally a few models of reflection used to coax exercises out of encounters. In 1978 Argyris and Schon set up single circle and twofold circle learning. In the previous idea the association or the individual follows the present methods or techniques much after remedies are made to the present blunders. Be that as it may, the late idea includes alteration of methods and techniques. Later in 1984 Schon authored the ideas of Reflection in real life (RIA) and Reflection on Action (ROA). RIA is an idea when the professional is confronted with an issue he settles on a choice dependent on his inclination and related involvements. Then again, Reflection on Action is a thought where the expert examines the experience after it is finished. By and by, I have encountered both the ideas during a few circumstances in life intentionally or unwittingly. Uncommonly, during our ALE1, we were allowed a chance to think about our presen tation after each undertaking. This portrayed our handy usage of Reflection on Action. By actualizing the gaining from past assignment in the later errand we have likewise practiced the idea of Reflection in real life. To make reference to a model, in the main errand we were given a sheet of directions which were dubious. Be that as it may, we went to play out the assignment without breaking down the standards and we neglected to complete the errand inside the given time. After the reflection meeting, when we proceeded to play out the subsequent assignment, we made it a point to peruse and comprehend the guidelines cautiously. Kolbs Experiential Learning Cycle is another incredible commitment to this idea. This learning cycle has four phases (Concrete Experience, Reflective, Abstract Conceptualization and Active Experimentation Observation) and the reflection happens after the circumstance has happened. In the primary stage the specialist focuses on something that they have done and later reflects and investigates the new plans to all the more likely play out the errand. In the third stage he frames new thoughts and tests them in the fourth stage. This circle is proceeded starting with one undertaking then onto the next. is another procedure where the expert portrays the circumstance as well as investigations it. Not at all like different models it likewise has an activity plan stage where the reflector specifies the activities that he might want to change if a similar circumstance happens. Jhons model of Reflection then again includes offering the encounters to a partner. It has two phases Looking in on ones contemplations and feelings and Looking Out at the circumstance experienced. Reflection on my Personal Development : At first, when we were given learning logs for our ALE, I didnt know the significance and preferences of it except if we began composing the intelligent log after each undertaking. Subsequent to discovering this is truly outstanding and simple approaches to change oneself, I have expressed utilizing the intelligent composing instrument each time I needed to build up the manner in which I work and think. During our ALE we have utilized a few instruments to more readily get ourselves. During our criticism meeting, we were approached to utilize Johari Window to know our assistant individual connections and correspondence. In spite of the fact that I was glad about the descriptors referenced in the open meeting, the modifiers referenced in the Blind Spots segment were very astonishing to me. The vulnerable sides for me were mind boggling and pleased. At the point when I attempted to discover the reasons from my associates for the equivalent, I was informed that however I am a well disposed, work-arranged individual, I some of the time get a lot into detail in a gathering errand or task and its hard for them to get me. This might be on the grounds that however I am clear about the theme, I at times think that its hard to clarify which befuddles the others. Additionally, the criticism I for the most part get from a large portion of the individuals following scarcely any long periods of be ing with me is that I believed that you are a pleased individual when I at first met you. The purpose behind this is, the point at which I meet new individuals or enter another condition, I set aside some effort to acclimate and except if I know them, I dont start a discussion with individuals. In spite of the fact that this view of them changes at a later stage, it gives a pessimistic vibe to individuals in the underlying stage. Likewise, as indicated by Belbin Self-Perception Inventory, the group jobs I have likeness towards are completer and authority. These two jobs mirror my working style appropriately. I generally attempt to find out more and have some expertise in the branch of knowledge of my advantage. Likewise, in light of the fact that I am acceptable at dissecting and give a decent consideration to subtleties, I am constantly given the obligation of doing the very late cleaning and altering in our gathering assignments. In any case, there are additionally negative sides to these group jobs which I am mindful of and are a piece of my advancement plan. As an expert however I learn inside and out about the subject of my advantage, I disregard different subjects which I am not inspired by. Likewise, the vulnerable side complex that I have referenced before can be identified with the shortcoming of the completer. As a completer idea I attempt to get the everything about the report right, I some of the time take the hairsplitting to the boundaries. As per Honey and Mumfords Learning Styles, I am a Reflector. As a reflector I like to gain from exercises that let me think, watch and survey. In any case, I find is hard to focus on a talk except if I think that its fascinating. This can be connected to my shortcoming as a Specialist. As per the MBTI my character type is ISFP (Introversion, Sensing, Feeling, and Perceiving). This shows I am a people groups individual who is amicable and despise clashes. Be that as it may, I like to have my own space. The MBTI and IDAP matrix show me on the People Caring piece of the framework. This is small negating. In spite of the fact that I am open to working in a group, I want to chip away at my own. I think that its hard to pass on a message as I feel that negating with others perspectives may make issues by and by. As a feature of the self-improvement, I might want to build up an ability to speak a message in a delicate manner and might want to figure out how to keep up an expert connection with others in group as the vast majority of the work in association is group based. Additionally, might want to build up my systems administration abilities. Reflection on my administrative aptitudes: As indicated by Reynolds Reflection is an administration device for critical thinking. Additionally, the accompanying statement delineates the significance of the executives in an association. Make your top chiefs rich and they will make you rich. Robert H. Johnson An inquiry that numerous individuals pose is the reason we would it be advisable for us to consider the board hypotheses? Individual characteristics, qualities, convictions and mentalities are the center individual skills which may upgrade or debilitate ones capacity to oversee others. Likewise, it is the conduct and ability of the person that has significant impact on the presentation of the organization. Consequently, a comprehension of administrative speculations is useful for somebody who tries to be a chief as most balanced choices depend on hypotheses. A broad investigation of the hypotheses accessible is additionally exceptionally accommodating for a director so as to more readily deal with their group as speculations give data about how to carry on and help change the conduct. Hypotheses likewise give a typical structure and thought regarding rehearses. Over some undefined time frame the reason for work and the manner in which the work is directed is changing in the association. The administration styles must be changed likewise. Minor says that the more that is thought about association and their strategies for activity, the better the odds of managing them. Comprehension might be further developed than forecast, however both give the chance to impact or to deal with what's to come. Hypothesis gives a sound premise to activity. Thus, a comprehension of the executives speculations and information about association are significant for an administrator to more readily play out their assignments. Mullin in his book, Management and Organizational Behavior has followed an edge work of four primary ways to deal with clarify the Management Theory. The Classical Approach which underscores on the reason and formal order of the executives. The old style journalists focused on improving the operational proficient in an association. Brench, a traditional author additionally gave an idea of handy way to deal with association structure dependent on attempted general standards rather than the fixation on explicit cases. Assessment: The old style scholars are reprimanded for not mulling over the character factors and for making an association structure in which individuals practice a restricted control. Likewise, giving a lot of standards to perform the board obligations has been exposed to analysis. Two Major sub-gatherings of traditional methodology are : Logical Management: This idea was created by Taylor who was a devotee to the Rational-financial necessities idea of inspiration. The accentuation of this was on getting expanded efficiency from singular laborers through the specialized organizing of the work and giving money related impetuses as an inspiration for more significant levels of yield. Despite the fact that this idea has given an approach to the board thinking and the improvement of authoritative conduct, it was broadly reprimanded by laborers. How Much Equity to Give to New Co-Founders and Employees

How Much Equity to Give to New Co-Founders and Employees The journey to founding and running a startup from an idea is indeed very exciting for entrepreneurs even though the process carries its own share of risks and tough decisions to make. One of the most difficult decisions you will have to make as a founder is how to distribute equity among your co-founder(s) and earliest employees. Equity negotiations can be a cause of disagreements and stress and yet, are absolutely necessary. © Shutterstock.com | LightspringWith respect to the division of equity, there is really no one-size-fits-all solution that may be cited. However, this article makes the task easier by introducing you to: 1) what compensation methods are available for new co-founders first employees, 2) some factors to help determine how much equity founders get, 3) fixing employee equity, and 4) suggestions (formulas) for distributing equity shares.WHAT COMPENSATION METHODS ARE AVAILABLE FOR NEW CO-FOUNDERS FIRST EMPLOYEESEquity shareEquity share is a term that refers to non-cash compensation in terms of company ownership. Considering the fact that executing an equity compensation program is a complicated affair, companies have to plan and utilize appropriate accounting, legal and tax advice and planning. Typically, founders get equity share in the startup’s initial period and either forego their salary or settle for a low one. Equity compensation helps to attract and keep employees in a startup environment because these companies generally are short of the initial funds to get superior employees.Stock optionsStock options are a kind of stock-based compensation (involving an agreement whereby an employee, typically a high-placed executive gets company stock instead of or in addition to cash as salary). The intention behind offering stock compensation is to provide the employee with a considerable portion of the company’s stake, expecting this to motivate him to work harder or operate in the best interest of shareholders. If the company’s share price increases, stock compensation can be quite lucrative for the employee.Stock options are of two types namely non-qualified stock options (NQOs) and incentive stock options (ISOs). NQOs do not give the recipient any special tax treatment and may be granted to consultants, directors and employees. ISOs are a production of the tax code. As long as a set of statutory requirements are met, the holder or recipient will get favorab le tax treatment. However, owing to this pleasing treatment, there is a limit on the availability of this stock option. Typically, no tax effect applies to the optionee when he is being vested or granted either stock option.Apart from stock options, a startup may consider other kinds of stock-based compensation such as restricted stock, California style or early exercise option, or profits interests. Whichever the kind of stock compensation opted for, it carries its own distinct set of advantages and disadvantages.Fixed salaryFixed salary is common for employees whereas equity sharing is more the norm for co-founders.Considering the future expectations of your company, managing a trade-off between the three compensation methods discussed above might just be superior to any other combination.SOME FACTORS TO HELP DETERMINE HOW MUCH EQUITY FOUNDERS GETThough the way equity is split varies with individual situation, here are some factors that are typically taken into consideration:Who c ame up with the idea? The person who came up with the original idea for the business gets a premium. His premium further increases if he is also the one who started the early development efforts and gathered together the original team. Depending on the contributions in this area, share holdings are boosted by 5 to 30 percent. An only founder gets 100 percent equity at the idea stage.Stage of the startupAs the startup grows (from idea stage through co-founder, family and friends, seed round, Series A, and IPO stages) and it gets more and more funding, the more companys equity has to be given up in return for new financing. At the same time, you as a founder or one of the founders are getting a share of a pie that keeps growing bigger with your business’ growth.Salary or no salaryIt is not unusual for start-up founders to forego a salary or settle for a reduced salary in the initial days of a start-up. When founders forego a salary in the initial period, they typically get considerab le ownership in exchange. Some may say that foregone salary should not be made up for in terms of equity, firstly, because it is practically impossible to settle on the correct amount of equity for the sacrificed salary. Secondly, the practice can trigger certain issues with respect to tax, accounting, and withholding.RoleUsually, people with a prominent role/position in the company get a premium stake over those with a non-key role. Thus, a CTO or CEO gets a much bigger stake than for example, a graphic designer or office manager. With respect to equity sharing among co-founders, one can think in terms of the co-founder’s anticipated role in the organization on the basis of his degree of skill, capability, and the firm’s requirements. However, considering that your firm’s needs and possibly even the roles of the founders, could change considerably over time it would be wise not to base the equity distribution too much on just one skill or contribution.Nature of contributionTh e contribution of a founder could for example, include one or more of these: the idea, patents, capital, business expertise, or ongoing work. Comprehend the nature of contribution and its value and give the fair due based on contribution. For a co-founder who makes considerable capital contribution, you may consider giving them additional founder shares in return. Alternatively, you can consider distributing founder equity on the basis of the individual level of work contribution (sweat equity) from each individual. In that case, you would give a founder’s financial contributions the same treatment as you would give those of a seed investor â€" by issuing series seed preferred stock or convertible debt.Money or funding (External investors)A commonly accepted formula for distributing equity within the hierarchical organization is this:In the case of a single phase of investmentsFounders: 50 to 70 percent Investors: 20 to 30 percent Option pool: 10 to 20 percentIn the case of multip le phases of investmentsFounders: 20 to 30 percent Investors: 50 to 70 percent Option pool: 10 to 20 percentWith respect to dividing equity among individual investors, a simple formula is this,  if you have to raise $3 million but the investors feel the company’s value amounts to $10 million, you should hand over 30 percent of the company to them for their money.SacrificesWhen founders contribute to the startup venture, they may be coming from any of various situations â€" while some may have been close to a considerable raise, some others may have been dealing with unemployment. The earnings that a founder was used to prior to deciding to co-found could impact the extent of equity he asks for. To retain a founder’s interest, it may be necessary to suggest a more attractive offer.  Part-time or full-time A part-time founder gets less equity than the one who devotes his entire time (possibly after quitting an existing job) to the venture. The reason is obvious â€" he has less wei ght of risk on his shoulders and is also giving in less time and value commitment to the company. Generally, a part-timer gets under half the equity that his full-time counterpart gets.Kevin Systrom: The Equity Question FIXING EMPLOYEE EQUITYThe objective of employee equity is to make the first employees sensitive to feel an emotional ownership with your/your company’s great idea, its gripping product and the organization you are asking them to help grow.Factors affecting employee equityThe percentage equity a hire gets depends on factors such as domain expertise, how early he joins (if he joins earlier, there is more risk and less stock), how critical the person is to the company and its funding, experience with associated ventures, whether or not he is replaceable, and connections. An equity premium may be considered if the employee is irreplaceable. How dilution affects employee equityThe percentage of equity an employee gets over time would gradually come down as more investors join and the company has to issue more stock (dilution). If, for example, an employee started off with 5 percent of equity, followed by which the company received two rounds of funding, the employee’s stock may be reduced to  two-thirds or even half the original percentage for each funding round. Here’s a reality check. The early staff of a pre-funded startup that ultimately raises some rounds of capital can expect to endure considerable dilution, if the outcome is positive. If the outcome is less than positive, considering preferences, the employee may have to expect nothing more than what’s necessary to keep them on the job, if that’s required at the acquiring company.Entrepreneur Advice From Founders: How Much Equity to Give Co-Founders SUGGESTIONS (FORMULAS) FOR DISTRIBUTING EQUITY SHARESHere are some suggestions for a sample model of ownership (equity) distribution.Idea StageIf you are the sole person who came up with the idea for your business at this stage, you get to keep 100 percent.Co-founder stageIdeally, a startup should have a minimum of two founding members and no more than five partners. In this model, let’s assume that there are two co-founders. Your co-founder contributes considerable value, is doing half the work and is taking a great risk by co-founding. Though you came up with the idea, considering that your co-founder is doing so much for the business, it is only fair to give her a 50 percent share of the equity pie.If there are more co-founders, you might want to consider creating a table with the names of all the founders, the eight factors mentioned above for determining equity distribution and/or any other factors you may feel necessary. You can also consider creating a table with these five key factors alone â€" idea, business plan, commitment and risk, domain expertise, and responsibilities. Attach a value (weight) to each of the factors from 1 to 10 and multiply it by the founder’s contribution to that factor to come up with an equity allocation formula.Family Friends StageWith respect to family and friends, it may be better to consider their contribution as a loan and just repay it instead of going for equity allocation.Seed RoundKey investors that figure in the seed round are angel investors. While an angel investor invests her own money in a promising venture, a venture capitalist invests money from other people. In addition, unlike venture capitalists (VCs), a lot of angel investors don’t invest purely for profit. A key motivating factor for them may be the enjoyment associated with assisting a young business to succeed.Angel investorsConsider that your angel investor has a minimum of $1 million in the bank or has an annual income of $200,000. Let’s say he assumes your business is worth $1 million and decides to invest $200,000. To decide the percentage equity you should give to the angel, calculate the post-money valuation and divide the investment by this amount. Thus: post-money valuatio n= $1,000,000 + $200,000= $1,200,000Equity percentage = $200,000/$1,200,000 = 1/6 or 16.7%Early employeesA usual range for the option pool would be 15 to 20% to begin with. You can consider paying your first employees market salaries. Series AThe first VC round makes up Series A.Let’s assume that the venture capitalist puts your company’s current value at $4 million (pre-money valuation) and decides to invest $2 million. Thus, post-money valuation= $4,000,000 + $2,000,000 = $6,000,000Equity percentage= $2,000,000/$6,000,000= 1/3 or 33 .3%Following Series A, you may continue to Series B and C. At some point, you may reach one of any three situations:Your funding is over with no investors to help and your business dies,You acquire enough funding to develop something which a bigger company desires to buy,Your progress is so good that following a number of funding rounds, you go public (Initial Public Offering or IPO).Post Series AWith respect to option pools at this stage, the media n range can be assumed at approximately 15 to 25 percent depending on the company’s headcount requirements.Initial Public OfferingInitial Public Offering or IPO refers to a company’s first sale of stock to the public. The majority of IPOs are offered by small companies in search of a new source of financing. Through this source of financing, a company can raise funds from millions of normal people. One of the key reasons why you could choose to go public is that the stocks you sell on the stock market can be bought by anybody. Owing to the fact that anyone can purchase the stocks, you would probably be able to see a good amount of stock without much delay compared to approaching individual investors and requesting them to invest. This makes it an easier option for acquiring money. However, an IPO is not without risk. One cannot tell how much demand would be there for the stock following its initial offering. The risk is because of the uncertainty with respect to the stock’s re sale value. The IPO stage is a cash-out day for employees who accepted stock in exchange for living with the risk of a possible startup failure, and working for low salaries.Whatever kind of math you apply to split founder equity, at the end of the day, all parties affected should be happy about the distribution. The ideal win-win situation is to create the right kind of incentive to make people continue to toil for your company without it being too much of a financial burden for you.In closing, a few last words of advice. Irrespective of the initial equity split, it may be wise to seriously think about vesting your founder shares over a minimum period of two years at least. By vesting, you would be enabling the shares to be metered out so that a partner who defects early or changes his mind, would not carry off half the company.Founders Dilemmas: Equity Splits

Essay about Child Labor Nowhere Is Without - 1312 Words

Look down at your clothes. Who do you think made the shirt you’re wearing? How about your shoes? If you look behind the brand name, go beyond the title, or the product, you spot the real manufacturers, children. The Fight Against Gender Inequality - 1135 Words

Over the past decades, despite people have advances on gender inequality, but the sexism still prevalent in all aspects of life and in most countries around the world. I am a woman. I was born and raised in Vietnam, where gender biased ideology is extremely prevalent throughout society. It is an ideology in which men are considered more important than women. In the spiritual life of Vietnamese, people must have a son to keep their family lineages continuously growing. This pressure is on people from generation to generations. The gender disparity gradually seeps into the minds of Vietnamese people. When I grow up, I learn and admire for the gender equality in most advanced countries in the world, especially the United States. However, after I have been living in the United States for over 5 years; I have realized that although a great deal of progress has been made in the fight against gender disparity, discrimination still occurs, not only between races, but also between men and wo men. What is the point, Jo, my darling Jo, has just blatantly displayed that she does not, nor does she wish to, love me. She says that she loves me dearly as a friend but how can that be true if she could refuse me in the way that she did. How could she refuse me†¦ me of all people? We have been the best of friends for such a long time. We will write a custom essay sample on Little Women speech or any similar topic only for you Order Now She mustn’t be as smart as I once thought. She speaks of how wonderful life would be if she had some money and I am offering that to her, but she has refused. Maybe I was wrong to love her. How could I have fallen in love with a girl who is so incredibly masculine and different? But I have and just knowing that she does not love me back, I know she would if she would just try. There isn’t much I can do about it now though, she has made up her mind and if I know Jo as I know I do, once her mind is made up, not even she can change it. Maybe grandfather is right, maybe it is best for me to go away. I do not wish to waste my life here in this room, staring out this window watching the girls all day every day. But I do not wish to leave my Jo behind. She is the reason that I went to college. I graduated with honours for goodness sake, and all for nothing. I suppose I could go and join the family business but I would really rather focus on my music. I don’t understand. Last night she seemed so happy to see me – I was sure she would accept me – she called me a hero. What girl in her right mind would not want a hero? But Jo is not a normal girl, she is †¦ well different and that made me love her all the more. She and her sisters are so incredibly wonderful and their mother reminds me of my own. I have always wanted my mother back and Marmee is so much like her it almost pains me to hear her speak. The way that she looks at the girls, the same way my mother used to look at me and Mr March is like Father. Father went away to war and a couple of weeks later we received news that he died in battle. Mr March, although is not like him, reminds me of him. I guess partly it could have been the thought of having a mother and a father again that I really fell in love with. Maybe Jo, my beautiful Jo, was just a way of getting that again. Good morning/ afternoon Dr Mayne and fellow students. The recount that I have just presented was told from Laurie’s perspective and takes place after Chapter 35, Heartache. This chapter is the scene when Laurie asks Jo to marry him and she refuses. In this recount, Laurie is sitting at his window looking out at the March’s house and contemplating why he asked Jo to marry him and his upcoming trip abroad. Theodore Laurence, or Laurie as he is known, plays a very important role in the book Little Women. He is a member of the wealthy Laurence family and is the heir to the Laurence business. He is a member of the middle-upper class of society. Laurie demonstrates a very different point of view from other men of the time. Being of this class, and asking Jo, a girl who is very much beneath him, to marry him, he challenges the discourse of class very strongly. In the time of the 1860s, it was very much frowned upon to marry beneath you. However, Laurie does not believe that class matters when he asks Jo to marry him. Also he challenges this discourse in that he has always associated with the March family. Laurie challenges both this discourse and the discourse of gender by not wanting to join the family business, as was the custom of the time for men, instead wanting to focus on his music. In addition, he challenges the gender discourse as the males of this time were supposed to be the â€Å"dominant† person in the marriage; however it is clear that he would allow Jo to be dominant. He also challenges this discourse simply by asking Jo to marry him as she is perceived to be very masculine and does not act as a young lady of that era was expected to act. In saying this, however, he also endorses this discourse. As he is wealthier than Jo, Laurie would be the â€Å"breadwinner† for the family, a role traditionally accepted by men at the time. Laurie not only supports Jo and her â€Å"masculine† ways but he often says that the girls are lucky. He does not like the fact that he has to study and he often wishes that he could be like the March girls and not have to study. He also falls in love with Jo even though she does not conform to the ways of the 19th century. In fact, that makes him like her more. Laurie is very kind and respectful towards women, unlike other men of his time, and has a very positive attitude towards them. Although he is expected to, he does not wish to join the family business, however in this recount, he begins to change his mind and feels that the business would actually be good for him. Up until he asks Jo to marry him, Laurie is quite careful with his money. After Jo refuses him though, he begins to spend it all. He wishes he could be freer and be able to do what he likes, like the March girls. This again, challenges the discourse of gender in a way, as he does not wish to act like a male is supposed to act. Laurie is very strong in his belief that women are equal. To coincide with this, he also believes in the equality of class. This is evident throughout the book and most obviously in his interaction with the Marches as a poorer family. A stereotypical male and upper class man of the time would not have associated with a family such as this especially because they are women of a lower class. It is very clear that Laurie is not like these men especially when he asks Jo to marry him. There are many gaps and silences that surround Laurie in this book. One gap that was addressed in the recount was the issue of Laurie’s mother and father. It seems that Laurie’s mother was a lot like Marmee and his father went to war like Mr March. It could be said that this is the real reason that Laurie wants to marry Jo and be a part of the March family. As he says in the recount, â€Å"he has always wanted his mother back† and being a part of the March family may fulfil that desire. While it is very clear in the recount that Laurie is not the typical male – he does not want to study or work in the business and seems to have a more feminine mind – other traits are only hinted at throughout the book. He could have a bit of a temper which is shown in the recount. It could also be said that he is quite selfish as he could just want to marry Jo to be a part of the March family and â€Å"have† a mother and father again. He also spends a lot of the family’s money to make himself feel better after Jo refuses him. The audience is positioned to respond to Laurie in a mixed way. In some cases, the audience is positioned to like Laurie as he does not conform to the â€Å"rules† of the 19th century. He treats women equally and, although they are considered beneath him, treats the Marches as friends. The audience could also sympathise with him when Jo turns him down as he becomes very quiet and is genuinely upset. Theodore Laurence is a very submissive character in the book Little Women. He is very respectful towards women. He is not the stereotypical male due to his belief in the equality of gender and class. Throughout the book he develops a very strong love for Jo March, however, when he asks her to marry him, she refuses. Yes grandfather I will prepare for our trip. I know it will be good for me to travel abroad – I just wish that I wasn’t going alone. I wish with all of my heart that Jo would come with me. How to cite Little Women speech, Papers

How To Write A Synthesis Essay Outline, with Example

How To Write A Synthesis Essay Outline, with Example Writing  a Synthesis Essay Outline Introduction writing Thesis writing Main body writing Conclusion writing Outline example On many occasions, students begin tackling their essay assignments before establishing the various attributes that differentiate essays. It is essential, first of all, to understand the various types of papers that exist and their main features before one begins handling their assignment. A synthesis essay can be described as any written work that seeks to make connections between different parts of a paper with the ultimate goal of presenting a unique theme, topic, or viewpoint. Synthesis essays always use a wide range of sources and this helps to support the author’s claim or stance on a particular topic or theme. The expectation here is that the sources will guide the writers in identifying the connection that exists between different sources from whence a solid theme, viewpoint or perspective will be formed. The implication here is that synthesis essays require a lot of research and students should be prepared for such work. Some students are often in the habit of assuming that this type of essays are out-rightly argumentative essays. However, as it will be discussed below, argumentative essays are only a type of synthesis essays. Therefore, it is essential to understand the differing aspects of all essays for one to be able to write a relevant article. Types of Synthesis Essay There are three types of synthesis essays. Details of each are shown below: 1. Argument Argument synthesis essays are a type of assignment  where the author seeks to present their stance or viewpoint, and supports it using facts from relevant sources. The facts provided to help enhance the author’s stance are often arranged in a logical manner. In most occasions, writers develop different thesis statements despite writing about the same topic. The above is allowed because the argument presented is individual and thus opens to interpretation. There can hence be two different theses from the same topic, and each is declared as an excellent work. 2. Review A review is simply described as a discussion of research that was done in the past. However, unlike regular literature reviews, it also entails a critical analysis of the source used. Its main goal is to affirm the need for more research on a particular topic. It thus seeks to determine the loopholes or the shortcomings of previous research discussions. 3. Explanatory Explanatory essays are also known as background synthesis essays. Unlike the argumentative that requires the author to have a stance, here, the author is only required to present facts about an object, state of affairs, or even a place to further the readers’ understanding. The goal or thesis is not as pronounced as when one is dealing with an argument essay because the author’s focus shifts to objectively organizing and presenting facts. In an argument paper, writers can go beyond the sources reading, when they are trying to make their stance clear. However, in an explanatory synthesis essay, authors are not expected to go beyond the facts that are in the sources provided. Structure of a  Synthesis Essay The first important, but overly forgotten bit is the topic selection. Before a writer thinks of an essay structure, it is essential to ensure that tips concerning topic selection are clear. There is one tip that is almost in every online guide, and it entails the selection of a topic that one is familiar with. The above is vital, or necessary, and will help writers to save time especially during the research. Once the topic is established and decided, the next bit involves the structure of the essay. Like all other essays, the synthesis essay has three main parts: the introduction, the main body, and finally the conclusion. Each section needs to follow certain steps and writers need to be familiar with these steps. Below are some tips on how each part needs to be written: Tips concerning introduction writing An introduction presents the readers with a brief discussion of the topic under review. Here, authors need to be creative and ensure that they capture their audiences’ interest, lest they lose them before they even make time to read the rest of the essay. The issue or topic or theme to be discussed should hence be clearly outlined and the author’s stance should be established in the introduction. Tips on thesis writing A thesis is the author’s main idea or perspective and must always be developed before commencing any work on the perfect essay. It is indeed illogical to develop one’s thesis without first reading the sources. Writers must first read the sources provided and then formulate their opinions on the subject or topic. On most occasions, a thesis statement is included in the introduction as the last sentence. Tips on body paragraphs (length, paragraphs, transition words) Synthesis essays often take after the five-paragraph structure and unless stated otherwise, most have five to seven paragraphs as well as six sentences in each paragraph. Transition words help to indicate that the author is on a different point. In some occasions, readers are left to find the points or themselves, and some end up getting mixed up and never even identifying a single point. Transitional words, for example, firstly, subsequently, additionally, etc. help to notify the readers that the author has moved on to the next point. Each paragraph must have a topic sentence, and these help building on the author’s thesis statement. An explanation of the topic sentence is also of the essence. Evidence from the sources used must also be provided, and the significance of whichever source must also be included. Tips on conclusion writing A conclusion can be said to be the easiest of these sections because the author is only expected to state the importance of their stance or viewpoint and provide a summary of the points discussed. While in most occasions authors finish their work flatly, in a synthesis essay one is supposed to be creative and include an ending that will elicit some thoughts from the audience. Example of Outline on Synthesis Essay about Global Warming Introduction Definition of global warming. Briefly mentioning some of the causes of global warming, for example, deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, increase in pollution levels, and industrialization. Mention some of the effects of global warming, for example, an increase in temperature, increase in sea levels which subsequently leads to flooding, etc. Thesis statement –assert that the world’s temperature level is rising and that the world needs to work together to help reduce the rate at which the temperature levels are rising. Main Body Paragraph 1–Mention IPCC’s assertion that the world’s sea levels will rise by 7 – 23 inches by the end of the current century. Include why this is important and will help build on the thesis statement. Paragraph 2 –The rise in temperature by 1.4 Fahrenheit degrees since 1880. Provide evidence of the above and mention the significance of this point. Paragraph 3 –The rapid melting of ice in the Arctic and the expectation that the region will soon have an ice free summer. Paragraph 4 –The rapid melting of glaciers with the consequence being increased in the sea levels. How is this point relevant to the thesis statement? Author needs to provide sufficient evidence of this fact. Paragraph 5 –Include the fact that the last two decades of the 20th century have been the hottest in the last 400 years. Evidence must be provided and this point’s relevance included. Conclusion A reassertion that the world’s temperature is steadily rising and how the world needs to be up in arms and strive to forge a way forward. A summary of the points provided in the main body. A question or an open discussion of how the world keeps drawing lines and keeping each other at arm’s length instead of fighting together to help stop the prospect of having to deal with the after-effects of global warming.

Private Lives by Noel Coward Act One

Private Lives by Noel Coward Act One Private Lives is a play written by Noel Coward, first performed in 1930 on the London stage, starring Adrianne Allen and Laurence Olivier as the supporting characters, Gertrude Lawrence as the female lead (Amanda) and Coward (yes, the playwright himself) in the lead male role (Elyot). This witty comedy explores what happens when ex-spouses encounter one another while on their second honeymoon. During Act One, as the synopsis of the script will indicate, we learn that Amanda and Elyot are not suitably matched with their fellow newlyweds. Instead, despite their natural inclination to be petty and argue with each other, they fall suddenly and madly back in love. But will it last? The Setting of Private Lives Act One of Noel Cowards play takes place in a French hotel overlooking a harbor (with an expensive yacht within view of the characters). The two hotel rooms are side-by-side, each with their own balcony. Elyot and Sybil British couple celebrating their honeymoon. It is Elyots second marriage. She wonders how she compares to Amanda, Elyots first wife. (From five years ago.) He explains that doesnt hate his ex-wife, but he does feel sorry for her. Sybil asks if he could ever love Amanda again. He explains that love should be cozy and not filled with drama and jealousy and rage. She also states that she looks for masculinity within her husband: I like a man to be a man. He speculates that his new, feminine wife has designs to shape his character into some masculine ideal. She objects, but he comments that her plans might be subconscious. After ending the conversation about his ex-wife, he suggests that they go down to the casino. Amanda and Victor After Sybil and Elyot exit, another honeymooning couple appears in the next room. The newlyweds are Victor and Amanda (Thats right Elyots ex-wife.) Victor strikes up a conversation similar to he previous couple. He is curious about Amandas ex-husband. She reveals that she and Elyot physically fought each other on many occasions: VICTOR: He struck you once, didnt he? AMANDA: Oh more than once. VICTOR: Where? AMANDA: Several places. VICTOR: What a cad! AMANDA: I struck him too. Once I broke four gramophone records over his head. It was very satisfying. As they discuss her first marriage and their honeymoon plans, we learn a few contrasts about each character. For example, Sybil hates sunburned women because it seems unladylike. On the other hand, Amanda is anxious to get a sunburn, despite her husbands distaste. We also learn that both Amanda and Elyot are found of gambling, not just at the casino, but taking risks in life. In the middle of their conversation, Victor realizes that he does not really know his new bride very well. He is shocked when she says that she is not a normal person. AMANDA: I think very few people are completely normal really deep down in their private lives it all depends on a combination of circumstances. After a romantic kiss, Victor and Amanda exit to prepare for their evening together. Elyot sits alone on his balcony. Amanda does the same. They do not notice each other until begins singing along to music. Amanda notices him first, and although they are surprised to see each other, they attempt to remain calm. Amanda excuses herself and goes inside. Elyot tries to explain to Sybil that they must leave at once, but he does not reveal the reason. When she refuses to allow them to leave, Sybil bursts into tears as Elyot rages about her stubbornness. In the next room, Amanda is in a similar argument with her husband. However, when Victor remains obstinate she reverts to the truth. But Victor believes that she has only imagined her ex-husband. Victor storms off, headed for the bar. Sybil leaves in hysterics, headed for the downstairs dining room. Elyot and Amanda recall their early days together, reminiscing over the pleasant times and walking through the character flaws that led to their downfall. ELYOT: Were not in love all over again and you know it. She asks about Elyots travels throughout the world. In the middle of that conversation, Elyot confesses that he loves her. He wants her back again. They kiss. He proposes that they escape immediately, but she thinks that they should be honest with their new spouses. He convinces her otherwise and together they leave the hotel room. Victor Meets Sybil Sybil and Victor both enter their respective balconies looking for their missing spouses. Victor chats with her, inviting her for a drink. They look off into a distance, noticing the yacht down in the harbor. Act One ends wondering if Elyot and Amandas whirlwind reconciliation will last, and whether or not the jilted spouses Victor and Sybil will find comfort in one anothers company.

Writing - Essay Example Before delving deep into the governance and economic systems of CBRM, is it important that we consider the problems faced by the province in recent years. It had once grown into an industrial slump, hit by depression and uncertainty. CBRM was perhaps was affected more than any other province in Canada. This gave rise to poor financial condition, poverty and unemployment. Thus, formulating the fiscal and economic policies has become a challenge for CBRM in present times. This paper aims at examining the governing system of CBRM, it fiscal and economic sustainability and policies for the same. This paper throws a good amount of light on the practices, policies undertaken and their outcomes. CBRM holds an important position when it comes to local administration (Impressions of Cape Breton, 1986, p 263). The crisis of DOSDO during 1966- 1967, has shaped up the political map of CBRM. Since then local political sensibility has controlled CBRM’s development, though political strategies implemented by the new government has succeeded in lessening political fragmentation within the province (Gagnon and Keating, 2012, p 110-111). In spite of following the policy of no amalgamation with other municipalities within the province of Nova Scotia, all the municipal corporations cooperate with each other. Generally municipalities which share any similar characteristics cooperate with each other. Thus there exists a relation based on cooperation among CBRM and another municipality HRM. The revenue that is earned is divided among the amalgamated provinces. Therefore, conflicts often occur over fair distribution of provincial revenues. Also, political lobbying also has its say wh en it comes of attention from Canadian government and share of resources (Sancton and Andrew, 2009, p 168). The amalgamation took place as a measure to reduce the annual expenditure. It was

The Tactical and Strategic Asset Allocation of Pension Funds Essay

The Tactical and Strategic Asset Allocation of Pension Funds - Essay Example The process of asset allocation may take place afresh for a new investor or through a review for an existing investor. The review of the pattern of allocation may take place on a continuous basis or periodically. The most important is the determination of the assets, liabilities and assess the net worth of investor that is available for investment. If the goal of the investor is to maximize the assets, the goal should be determined in terms of the assets required to be accumulated by the end of the investment period. This report seeks to brief asset allocation procedure and the strategies and tactics to be taken care of by an investor of pension fund to maintain a balance between risk and return. The origin of the employee benefit funds can be traced to the late 1800s; but it is their tremendous growth in the last 25 years that has established them as one of the most influential institutional investors in the United States of America. Pension funds dominate the investment scenario in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Canada. Almost 90 percent f the pension funds in Japan, the UK and Canada are mid-sized and large private and public sector employee funds. The asset allocation structure for pension funds can differ for both a country and a type of plan. The return from any investment is a function of the ability to take risk and the realization of market expectations. The economic model of defined pension plan is useful in interpreting the questions regarding investment decisions for pension assets. If defined benefit plans are looked at as an act of pension debt-servicing financial institutions, pension asset should be managed in the context of the nature of pension plan balance sheets. The riskiness of the pension fund cannot be judged by comparing with other pension plans or in terms of the absolute values of the pension liabilities, but are based on the nature of the plan liabilities, and in the context of the cash flow and the balance sheet characteristics of the employer liable to pension claims. The objectives set here for the fund is long term return and capital appreciation at the end of maturity. This needs to be done carefully by fund managers and the fund should be allocated in such a manner that majority of the fund sh ould be invested in equity of blue chips so that regular return can be expected and capital appreciation is also possible. However, there may be uncertainties with regard to the return from equity and to protect the investor from such a risk, a sizeable portion should be kept in bonds. The following two approaches will clearly discuss the manner in which the fund is allocated to

The Tragedy of Emma Bovary :: essays research papers fc

The Tragedy of Emma Bovary "I've never been so happy!" Emma squealed as she stood before the mirror. " Let's go out on the town. I want to see Chorus and the Guggenhiem and this Jack Nicholson character you are always talking about." Emma Bovary in Woody Allen's The Kugelmass Episode. As I sit here pondering the life of Emma Bovary I wonder what it must have really been like for her. She was young, younger than I am now when she died. She was curious and bright and probably would have been a great college student; passionate but with her head a little bit in the clouds. Opportunities for women in the 1850's were, as we all know, extremely limited. I wonder if I would have fared much better than Emma if I had been as trapped as her. I also married young, but when I realized it had been a mistake I had the option of a divorce, Emma did not. I have had the opportunity to receive a good education and to choose for myself what path my life would take. I feel very sorry for Emma. Having never been given the opportunity to discover her true self or to develop her dreams and hopes for her future, all she had to base her aspirations on were trashy romance novels. I cannot imagine what my life would be like if all of my teenage curiosity had been forced to be satisfied by nothing but Danielle Steel romance novels. Emma strove to better herself and her situation. She wanted to reach the upper echelon of society; she wanted what we in this country refer to as the "american dream." She wanted more than her parents had. Emma wanted to feel great love and own nice things and live in a wonderful city. These are not things that are alien to most of us. Although it may be amusing to read Woody Allen's‘ #' 0*((a a ‘ take on what Emma Bovary might be like if she went to modern day New York, it must also be realized that he is not completely mistaken in his ideas of her character. In a very humorous manner, Woody Allen is able to sum up Emma's lust for life and her desire to experience and learn new things; to actually go out and live. Perhaps a trip such as the one described in Mr. Allen's short story would have been the thing to save Emma Bovary, although I doubt she would have ever wanted to go back to Yonville as she does in Allen's story.

Negative Effect of Media to Women Essay

Negative Effect of Media to Woman In the article, â€Å"The Burka and The Bikini† by Joan Jacobs and Jacquelyn Jackson, they mention not only media can insult some cultures by showing almost nude females in their advertisement and it could also put a huge impact on most of our women’s health in the society we live in. They use two totally different views of two different world of women as their main example. They assert that some women covered up for the sake and a respect for the culture of their country and on the other hand, looking good, getting thin, and showing more skin are others women patriotic means for theirs. They also say women take this issue so serious that they risk their lives to achieve of what they believe is the media’s perception of a perfect body. Some negative outcome includes disorders and a lot of stress to our women in the society. They conclude that it does not matter if a media promotes a person naked or well dressed but what media needs to think is how this will badly affect women because their well- being is what counts for our future generation. It is very convincing what Brumber and Jackson’s claim on how negative effect of media in our society especially to women’s health is becoming an epidemic. Media is trying to make this century only for those women with perfect bodies and it is one of the big factors why our wives, daughters, sisters and a lot more women in our society are at health risks. From reality TV shows, newspapers, ad advertisements, billboards, and TV commercials, mostly thin and big breasted women are the star and most popular. It could be that the head of the media is a man? Not necessary, because not all men have the same perception of what a perfect woman is. As a matter of fact, I talk to my friend Ryan Pitts, who is my work out partner and works for Amtrak and ask him, what is your perfect description of attractive woman? He answers â€Å"umm ok, a woman should look normal and natural. Oh definitely, they need some makeup, their hair done, flattering clothes and shoes, but don’t overdo it. Too skinny is gross with your bones poking out everywhere its nasty. And for those of you who think you need breast implants†¦ think again! They look so fake, and you can’t hide that unless you cover up completely. † Because of media, most American women are suffering with a disorder called â€Å"Anorexia Nervosa,† the restriction and refusal of food to maintain a minimal normal body weight. One of the popular methods is vomiting using ipecac syrup, a medicinal plant from Brazil, and will trigger the central nervous system that will cause vomiting. One of the early tragic victim of Anorexia is for instance; Karen Carpenter, a popular singer of the 70’s. According to the article â€Å"Battling Anorexia: The Story of Karen Carpenter† by Adena Young, â€Å"Ever since Karen Carpenter died in 1983, doctors, scientists, and therapists, among many others, have been investigating the cause of this fatal eating disorder. One common cause, as everyone agrees, is American culture and the media. For the past few decades, there has been an American philosophy of â€Å"trim and slim. This is a nation where it is sexy to be skinny and where fitness centers and more recently, dieting supplements, are being advertised more than anything else †¦Ã¢â‚¬ So Anorexia has been around for decades now and it was clearly states on Young’s article that media is one of the reason. He also mentions, â€Å"Anorexia is especially common among young white girls and those who need to have more control over their lives. Among anore xics, you will find female hyper-achievers, fashion models, dancers, gymnasts, and ballet troupes. ANDRED (Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders, Inc. ) research suggests that about one percent of female adolescents have anorexia. That means that about one out of every one hundred young women between ten and twenty are starving themselves, sometimes to death. There do not seem to be reliable figures for younger children and older adults, but such cases, while they do occur, are not common. Furthermore, media advertisement about different kind of diet pills is another factor of how badly they affect women’s minds. They will put a young skinny model, who reads a script and really does not have anything to do with the product that she is trying to advertise to those women that are desperate to lose their fat. She is a model and gets pay to that job so what to expect. As a matter of fact, according to Jason Parker in his article, â€Å"The Bad Side Effects of Diet Pills† He states, If you’re thinking about resorting to diet pills for your weight problems, consider this. Dizziness, nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, blurred vision, fatigue, insomnia, heart failure, severe headaches, hair loss, urinary tract problems, tremors, hallucinations, heart attack, shortness of breath, dizziness, vomiting, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, stroke, convulsions, hyperactivity, addiction to pills, and heart palpitations†¦ These are some of the side effects of diet pills according to medical specialists (Parker). A diet pill is no different than the taking of steroids that might work for some time but in a long run the bad side effects will kick in and take effect. It is a form of pill that can poison women’s body but also their mind. Media is affecting our society in some ways that women will extremely do anything like plastic surgery to achieve what media calls â€Å"the perfect body. † According to the Cosmeticplasticsurgerystatistic. com, â€Å"nearly 11. 7 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2007. † What is that statistics tells us? Women will spend ridiculous amount of money to fit an artificial image created by an every expanding media. Reality TV shows like â€Å"Extreme Makeover† and Dr. 0210 are some of the most influential in media. Plastic surgery procedure like nose and lips reshaping, liposuction and breast augmentation are the most common procedures. It is faster way of loosing something that you do not want in your body so why not. It is a severe problem because we are giving young women a bad idea, and they think it is normal to do so. Media kee p showing this nicely done breast implants and a well done liposuction but where are those people that failed and even worst like died or people that they messed up on during and after the procedure. Going through such experience will really make people think hard and make smarter decision because once it is done it is scar that will not go away forever. Brumberg and Jackson asserts on how badly media influence our women in our society and brainwashes women’s mind on how they should have to look. The outcome of negative advertisement to woman’s mind could include, disorder, stress, lowered self-esteem and worst case scenario- death. According to Brumberg and Jackson conclusion, no matter where a woman’s from it does not matter if they are showing extra skin or not, what really counts is the woman’s health of our next generation. I have learned how powerful media is and that because of them most of our women will actually take the risks of endangering their lives. In the article, â€Å"In your face †¦All Over the Place! † by Jean Kilbourne, he clearly states, Advertising constantly promotes the core belief of American culture: that we can create ourselves, transform ourselves, transcended our circumstances-but with a twist For generations Americans believed if we work hard enough, like Horatio Alger. Today the promise is what we can change our lives instantly, effortlessly-by winning a lottery, selecting the right mutual fund, having a fashion makeover, losing weight, having tighter abs, buying the right car or softdrink. It is this belief that such transformation is possibles that drives us to keep dieting, to buy more stuff, to read fashion magazines that give us the same information over and over again†¦(373). It is actually the point of this argument, â€Å"it sounds too good to be true. † If you do not read the fine print, media is a conspiracy and a big corrupted propaganda. It is like a contagious disease on people’s mind especially for women in a bad way. It has to stop somewhere. Media is everywhere, people do not have a choice but to look and listen to all the lies. In a sense, they will buy it, and they had to because it is a gradual adaptation to our society. People just need to remember don’t let media fool you on what beauty standard should be. If people want to be thin or healthy, they just need to change their bad habit to good lifestyle and have a positive healthy attitude. Doing it right is worth a lot in a long run.

Teamwork And Communication Of The Healthcare Field Essay

Teamwork and communication are very important in providing good quality care, especially in the healthcare field. A team is described as a group of people that works together and cooperatively, between each member of the group to reach a common goal (Sullivan, 2013). For a team to function, communication is essential. A report by McKay and Crippen (2008), as stated by Alfaro-LeFevre, (2013) showed that when collaboration is in place, hospitals can decrease their mortality rate by 41%. When mortality rate is lower, hospitals does not only decreased cost, but it also means that patients are receiving good quality care. In the hospital, a team includes a CEO, managers, supervisors, charge nurses, medical doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers and maintenance crews; it can also include many other members. In addition, a well-functioning team is led by a good leader; a leader does not necessary mean the CEO, but someone who is driven, knowledgeable, and a good communicator. Charge nurse and nurses are normally the one that handles the care of patients in the hospital. Both charge nurses and nurses can be considered leaders. It is why, it is very crucial that nurses are good communicators. One would say that nurses are the spoke person of a hospital to its patients. The nurses care for their patient closely, they communicate with the doctors regarding the care of the patient; they communicate with the pharmacies, nursing assistant, colleagues, and many more.
